Ketamine Infusion Therapy Q&A

What is ketamine infusion therapy?

Ketamine infusion therapy is an outpatient procedure that uses ketamine –– a dissociative anesthetic –– to treat behavioral issues. During treatment, Dr. Madani administers ketamine intravenously into your bloodstream.

When the ketamine enters your body, it bypasses your digestive system, allowing for greater uptake by your cells. After the ketamine makes its way to your brain, it increases the activity of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. Increased glutamate activity can relieve symptoms associated with certain underlying medical issues.

When people are under stress or depressed for a long time, they can start to lose connections between neurons or synapses. When ketamine is administered, some of those effects seem to start to reverse. It is believed that ketamine may help regenerate these neuronal connections.

What conditions can benefit from ketamine infusion therapy?

Dr. Madani uses ketamine infusion therapy to treat various conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraines
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

You might also benefit from ketamine infusion therapy if you’ve been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What does ketamine infusion therapy involve?

Dr. Madani provides ketamine infusion therapy on-site in her state-of-the-art, spa-like facilities. At the beginning of your appointment, she has you sit down in a relaxing massage chair. Dr. Madani also provides you with an eye mask and a cozy blanket.

Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Madani sterilizes your arm with an antiseptic solution and carefully inserts the IV needle into a vein in your arm. The needle connects to an IV bag that contains a saline and ketamine solution.

While you receive the drip, you can relax and take a nap, listen to music, or watch TV. After the treatment session ends, Dr. Madani moves you to a recovery room and provides you with a complimentary drink and snack. Ketamine takes several hours to wear off, so you need someone to pick you up and drive you home.

In the days after your treatment, the ketamine encourages the activity of glutamate (a neurotransmitter) in your brain. This increased activity helps repair damaged synapses, reducing uncomfortable symptoms associated with issues like depression and chronic pain.

How long does it take for ketamine infusion therapy to work?

The length of time it takes for ketamine infusion therapy to work depends on various factors, including the severity of your symptoms and their effect on your daily life. Some people experience near-instant relief, but it takes several weeks or months for others.

How often do I need ketamine infusion therapy?

To ensure optimal results, Dr. Madani recommends a one-hour personalized infusion to relieve your symptoms initially, followed by four or five additional sessions over three weeks.

Dr. Madani can administer treatment on-site, or she can visit your psychotherapist’s office and administer it during your regular counseling sessions.
