How does it work?
Ketamine is a non-competitive antagonist at glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and has been traditionally used as a dissociative anesthetic. The exact mechanisms of ketamine’s effectiveness in the treatment of depression are still being studied, but current theories suggest it can increase the activity of the neurotransmitter glutamate in the brain, in addition to the regeneration of synapses that have become dysfunctional in mood disorders and pain states. One of the most remarkable findings is the ability of ketamine to exert rapid antidepressant properties as early as several hours after administration. This is in stark contrast to traditional antidepressants, which can take several weeks for a clinical response. It is believed this rapid response is because this drug bypasses the serotonin route and goes directly to activating glutamate. Traditional antidepressants initially target serotonin receptors and increase the activity of serotonin in different areas of the brain, and then ultimately affect glutamate. However, ketamine’s antidepressant properties are also transient, and while treatment may be effective immediately, patients may need to get boosters after the initial treatment period.

You will then be brought into our treatment room, where you can settle into a relaxing massage chair with an optional eye mask and blanket. We will hook you up to a monitor and get a small intravenous line started for your infusion. You can relax and receive your treatment in silence or stream your favorite music/TV show. After the infusion is completed, you will be escorted to our recovery area for a brief period of time. You will be given a snack and drink and meet your support person who will drive you home.
